Born in Holland, Klaas has lived in Richmond since 1952 and has been woodturning for over 15 years. He uses locally grown wood, or wood saved from landfill or fireplace, using
knotted crotch wood, burl and cavity filled wood, he fills holes with epoxies and pigments to create solid stock from which to work from. He creates pieces which show the wood grain and pattern. Each piece reflects the individual character of the wood. The finishing process can take up to 2-3 weeks of daily work thus bringing out the best the wood has to offer both in colour and depth.
His interest in photography began early, at age 8, with an old folding camera, since then he has moved with the changing technology from the folding camera to SLR cameras and 35mm slide film, now ending up with an SLR digital camera. During this time he also built darkrooms and experimented improving the quality of his photos.
His love of the river, its inhabitants and nature are reflected in this photos, as is the creativity of being able to "play" with colour in a digital format.
Klaas also now sits on the Board of Directors of the CACR.
